The following is a guide for installing a switch for the
CD-Rom drive, which opens and closes the CD Tray.
This is an excellent mod to go with a "Stealthed"
CD-Rom, it is a very simple mod, and should take less than 1 hour to complete.
The following is a list of the items that you
will need to complete this mod from start to finish:
1. Soldering Iron
2. Solder
3. 1 Momentary Switch
4. About 1 ½ feet of the double speaker wire, or 3 feet of single wire. The
gauge does not really matter you do not need a heavy wire.
5. Screwdriver
6. CD-Rom Drive
7. Heat Shrink tubing (Optional)
8. Hair Dryer (Optional)
Firstly, plug in your soldering iron to heat up while you begin your
preparations.
Get out your CD-Drive and remove the bottom
cover. Directly below the Open/Close switch on the Drive you will see 4 pins,
these 4 pins come from the switch. The two pins closest to the front of the
drive are the ones that will be used. Fig. 1.0 shows which pins are to be used.
Fig. 1
Once you have located these two pins the next thing you have to do is strip down
your wires at each end. The end that you will be attaching to the CD-Drive you
only need to strip it down about ¼ inch, anything more than that is just
unnecessary and will most likely get in the way.
N.B: If you are using the double speaker wire, just separate the wires about 1
inch down, so that when you are soldering you will be able to work with them.
If you are using the single wire, cut the wire in half so that you will have 2 -
1 ½ foot long pieces.
Now it is time to begin soldering, if you are
going to use Heat-Shrink tubing, cut a piece that will be long enough to cover
your exposed wires, and place it over the wire before you begin soldering. You
will have to solder your wires to the pins. Take one of the wires and solder it
to one of the pins, next, solder the other wire to the other pin. Make you that
you have a good solid solder so that the wire does not pull out easily. Fig. 2
below shows the drive after soldering.

Fig. 2
If you are using Heat-Shrink Tubing, once you have ensured that
your soldering is tight, put the Heat-Shrink over the exposed wires and use the
hair drier to "shrink" the tubing, be sure you apply an even amount of heat
around the tubing, and not too much on one side.
You are practically done!
Next, run your wires through the space where the
bottom cover for your drive is screwed in. Once you have done that, replace the
bottom cover.
Depending on where you are going to place the
switch you may need to install it first and then wire it.
Wiring is quite simple, if you are going to use
more Heat-Shrink tubing, place the tubing over the wires before soldering. The
switch has two poles on its bottom, solder one of the wires to one of the poles,
and solder the other wire to the other pole. Use your hair dryer to "shrink" the
tubing, and that it. Your done!
This mod is a perfect compliment to a Stealthed CD-Drive, both you and your
friends are sure to love this mod.
